Aki is a certified professional educator with over 15 years teaching experience in secondary, post-secondary, adult education, and training environments. In the past 9 years, he developed synchronous and asynchronous e-learning solutions for major aerospace and defence programs and higher education. Aki has designed many instructor-led and self-paced courses that offered a range of learning experiences such as on-the-job training, tutorials, simulation, and gamification.
His experience as an educator began with researching and teaching cultural education as a volunteer where he still continues to teach students and mentor fellow instructors. Shortly after, he continued his studies in secondary education (social studies and language arts) where he later became a substitute teacher with the Halifax Regional School Board (now HRCE). Over the years, he has tutored many high school, undergraduate, and graduate students with their writing and research skills as well as English language acquisition.
In 2015, Aki switched his focus to enhance learning programs in post-secondary education by creating an asynchronous tutor training course for Saint Mary’s University Student Association. In 2016, he joined Mount Saint Vincent University to help create Mount 101; an asynchronous course that assists first-year students with their transition to university. Aki co-created the curriculum, designed the course, acted as a subject-matter expert, and was the author of most of the content. Currently, over 600 students are taking this course every year.
Aki is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Education program at MSVU where he is specializing in Graduate Studies in Lifelong Learning. His research focuses on creating and testing a peer support toolkit that will assist faculty to adopt a learning-centered teaching approach in their classrooms. He also offers e-Learning consultations to small businesses and non-profit organizations.
